Why was this time called the Roaring Twenties?
This time was called the Roaring Twenties because of the great joy and prosperity this time brought to many after the hard times after the war. During this time, many new people were introduced to the community such as African-Americans through the Harlem Renaissance, and many new inventions that brought convenience to people’s lives such as the automobile which allowed people to have more leisure time for themselves.
What were the two racial groups and what was the purpose of each?
The two racial groups during the 1920s war the Ku Klux Klan and Garveyism. Garveyism was an ideology formed by Marcus Garvey that had two main beliefs; to return to their homeland in Africa, and to not seek integration into society. The Ku Klux Klan was a violent group of people who believed in anti-immigration (mostly African-Americans) and white supremacy.
Explain Prohibition.
Prohibition was the national banning of manufacturing, trading, and consuming of alcoholic beverages because the grain could be used to feed families in need, and all the money could be used to support needy families. Of course, some people did not like this law and started to produce alcohol illegally, earning themselves the notorious name, Bootleggers. Some very famous bootleggers included Scarface Al Capone and many others.
What was the teapot dome scandal?
The Teapot Dome Scandal was a bribery incident during the administration of United States President, Warren G. Harding. Albert B. Fall leased Navy Petroleum to Teapot Dome, Wyoming and two other locations at low rates without “competitive bidding”.
Describe the Harlem Renaissance.
The Harlem Renaissance, or the Jazz Age, was the influence of African-American culture, art, music and literature to the average white community. The Harlem Renaissance sparked many new industries such as Dance Halls because of the new type of music. The Harlem Renaissance started in a small part of Harlem, New York and from there has expanded throughout the whole world.
What procedure did Henry Ford adopt to make it possible for a mass production of cars?
To make it possible for every American to own a car, Henry Ford introduced the Installment Plan. The Installment plan was given to a person when they wanted to purchase a car, and they would pay monthly towards the purchase.
What was the installment plan? How was it an advantage and disadvantage?
The installment plan was a form of transaction created by Henry Ford to make it possible for most of society to be able to afford/purchase an automobile. This was an advantage because it made everyone on “equal ground” since the luxuries were affordable to most. Owning a car made it possible to spend your time doing more enjoyable activities and the freedom of transportation was quite revolutionary at the time. To move from one place to another in a relatively short span of time was a great liberty to have, expanding what you can do. However, despite its affordability, many people still could not have this convenience and often became indebted and fell into poverty.
Describe Black Tuesday and the Great Depression?
Black Tuesday was the day that marked the Great Depression. The Great Depression occurred when over 16 million stocks were being traded at one time, leading to crash in the stock market. This crash left millions in poverty and inflation occurred, making life even harder for many people. This Inflation occurred because of the increasing demand for goods and products to help the citizens sustain themselves. The Great Depression occurred on October 29th, 1929. People were left with massive debt, as unemployment was very high, wages were very low, and real wealth was only concentrated among few families.
