U.S. entry into the war.
the U.S. Senate voted in support of the measure to declare war on Germany. The House concurred two days later. The United States later declared war on German ally Austria-Hungary
Impact on the home front
On the home front, millions of women went to work, replacing the men who had shipped off to war, while others knitted socks and made bandages.
Economic boom and consumer culture
The prosperity of the 1920s led to new patterns of consumption, or purchasing consumer goods like radios, cars, vacuums, beauty products or clothing. The expansion of credit in the 1920s allowed for the sale of more consumer goods
Rise of the automobile industry.
Henry Ford’s advances in assembly-line efficiency created a truly affordable automobile, making car. It employed many people and sustained the economy in the 20s. This lead too tremendous growth in automobile ownership, with the number of registered drivers almost tripling to 23 million by the end of the decade.
Jazz Age and cultural changes.
The profound social changes brought about during the Jazz Age led to divisions between rural, more traditional people and those who belonged to the more worldly urban culture. They also fostered divisions between younger and older generations.
18th amendment
prohibited the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors…”
Speakeasies and the rise of gangsters.
Mobsters made millions of dollars every year from bootlegging and running thousands of speakeasies
Repeal of Prohibition.
People of means never really had a problem paying for alcohol. The great irony of repeal is that it became harder to get a drink when it was legal after, than when it was illegal.
