Progressive Era (1890-1920) Flashcards
Woman’s suffrage
Women’s suffrage is the right of women to vote in elections.
Temperance and Prohibition.
The temperance movement, rooted in America’s Protestant churches, first urged moderation, then encouraged drinkers to help each other to resist temptation, and ultimately demanded that local, state, and national governments prohibit alcohol outright.
Child labor and workplace reforms.
As progressive child labor reformers gained traction during the last quarter of the 19th century, efforts expanded at the state level to outlaw the employment of small children. The move toward state-level reforms proved challenging. Many states, particularly in the South, resisted the effort.
Direct election of senators. (17th amendment)
It overrides the previous Constitution’s provisions on the election of senators, changing it so that they are elected directly by the voting public during elections.
Initiative, referendum, and recall.
California voters approved the constitutional processes of initiative, referendum, and recall. Through these processes, voters can adopt a change in law (an initiative), disapprove a law passed by the Legislature (a referendum), or remove an elected official from office (a recall).
Theodore Roosevelt’s Square Deal.
The Square Deal was Theodore Roosevelt’s domestic program, which reflected his three major goals: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection.
