Government introduced protective tariffs on imports to try to foster a recovery in their own industries and increase demand for goods produced at home by making foreign goods more expensive.
The Depression also caused great social problems as mass unemployment and poverty grew. What happened?
Many people blamed the weakness of their government for their suffering and more extreme political parties gathered support. Radical political parties seemed to offer salvation, where liberal democracies had failed.
