The American Policy to give Allied troops (specifically Britain) much needed supplies in return for an I.O.U. or trade for land, rent-free, for military bases.
Nazi-Soviet Pact
The agreement between Germany and Russia that stated neither side would attack the other. Basically allowed Hitler to invade Poland.
Atlantic Charter
Signed by Churchill and Roosevelt, it was a pledge of post-war goals.
Rationing
Using less of certain products, or going without so that the surplus materials can be sent overseas to the military.
Island Hopping
General MacArthur developed this strategy in the Pacific to systematically gain islands from the Japanese.
Pearl Harbor
The surprise attack on the United States by Japan, on December 7, 1941.
Bataan Death March
Prisoners of war in the Pacific, were made to march 65 miles.
Atomic Bomb
Preparation and research was called the Manhattan Project. The United States dropped two of them on Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Holocaust
Term for the persecution of Jews and other groups by the Nazis.
Normandy Invasion/D-Day
A major defensive Allied push, permanently turning the tide of war in favor of the Allies. Troops attacked the Normandy shore.
Blitzkrieg
Literally, “lighting war,” the very effective style of fighting the Germans used to quickly invade or attack other countries.
WACs
The women who worked as clerks and nurses during the war.
Japanese Americans
Sent to internment camps because the United States feared that they might be spies for Japan.
Tuskegee Airmen
African American pilot group.
V-E Day
Stands for Victory in Europe, May 8, 1945.
