  • To preserve peace, Britain and France agreed that Germany should have Sudentenland.

War Comes to the U.S.

A

The Japanese had seized most of China, Germany defeated France in 1940.
After Germany defeated France the Japanese signed an alliance with Germany & Italy.
The U.S. tried to stop Japanese aggression by refusing to sell oial & scrap metal to Japan.
The embargo angered the Japanese because they needed those resources.

Training for Combat

A

The Army, Navy, and Air Force built bases across the country. Recruits trained to fight in jungles, deserts, and towns.
Women joined the armed services although they were not allowed in combat. Many served close to the front lines.

Organizing the Economy

A

Government agencies set prices, negotiated with labor unions, and rationed goods.
War Production Board- helped factories shift from making consumer goods to making war goods.
Automakers switched from making cars to producing tanks & trucks.
During the war wages rose, farm goods doubled, and relief programs like the CCC & WPA were no longer needed.

New Roles for Women

A

More than 6 million women entered the workforce.
Women replaced jobs that men had before they went to war.
Jobs: factory workers, offices, welding, police officers, and gas sation attendants.
Because women were needed in industry, they were able to win better payment and working conditions.
