What is trench warfare?
Warfare in trenches (characterized much of the fighting during WW1 particularly along the Western Front)
What are the methods of digging trenches?
- Entrenching
- Sapping
- Tunneling
What is “No Man’s Land”?
The land between two enemy trench lines (often covered with barbed wire & land mines)
How far apart were enemy trenches usually?
50-250 yards apart
When did most raids take place?
At night when soldiers were able to sneak across “No Man’s Land” in the dark
About how many feet were typical trenches dug into the ground?
12 feet into the ground
What reinforced trenches?
Wood beams, sandbags, wooden boards (duckboards) that usually covered the bottom of trenches to keep soldier’s feet above water
