How did the three very bad harvests in France start?
From 1787-1789, France had terrible weather, heavy rains, hard winters and hot summers
What was the result of the bad harvests?
Peasants/farmers ended up with smaller incomes, food prices rose, and farmers lost their jobs
Who didn’t struggle during these harvests?
The nobility; they continued to live in luxury
What is the Estates General?
King Louis XVI assembled this group in May 1789 (a group that hasn’t met since 1614)
Where did the King call the Estates General to meet?
Outside the Palace of Versailles near Paris
Why did the meeting of the Estates General go wrong?
The meeting went wrong because the King didn’t know what to say; he didn’t have control of the meeting
What is the National Assembly?
Deputies of the third estate that split off into their own group (happened; June of 1789), represented 96-97% of the population

What oath did the National Assembly pledge?
They pledged a promise called the Tennis Court Oath; an agreement made saying to not leave until the King met their demands (soon the 1st and 2nd estates joined the National Assembly)
