World War 1 Thesis Flashcards
Pros of US Involvement in WW1
Pros might have been more jobs for the US citizens (not just as soldiers but also as medics, mechanics, supplies, messangers, etc. Plus the old jobs some of these people had left to be in the War were now open to the jobless), a cleaner conscious (duh), and of course there’s the everlying benefit that the Allied Powers literally wouldn’t have won without their help even before physically fighting in it.
Cons of US Involvement in WW1
Like 100,000 Americans died and tons of money was spent and lost. Plus America formally confirming to the nation and the rest of the world they were joining the fight against Germany without a doubt made the prejudice towards German-Americans or German Immigrants worse in the US. A lot of money was spent on weapons and resources even before they joined so you can imagine they were really lacking in it after the fact.
What new technology did the US produce during the war?
Machine guns, tanks, barbed wire, airplanes, and most of all the steel battle ships which carried people and cargo.
What new technology did Germany introduce?
Poison gas
How did WW1 help rebuild the US’s legacy in a sense?
They had been embarrassed by the Zimmerman telegram and the USS Lusitania.
When did the Allied Powers think the War would be over by?
The first Christmas.
What did the Senate think of the aftermath of WW1?
They thought the cons were enough to justifiably make the US an Isolationist country.
Was it justified for the US to be involved in the war?
It was definitely justified for them to be involved and they should’ve physically joined sooner because they were absolutely the turning factor of the War. I don’t feel like I really need to argue that to be honest.
Zimmerman Telegram
A Telegram sent by Germany to Mexico in code hoping to get them to invade the US while they were least expecting it in return for full support from Germany to recover territory they lost in the 1840s like Texas and Texas but better (Arizona, New Mexico, California). But this telegram was intercepted and translated by British Intelligence.
The USS Lusitania
A ship that got torpedoed by a German submarine. It was set to sail from New York to Liverpool and had “Nothing of interest or importance” but it definitely had a lot of weapons and resources for the Allied Powers. 1,197 people died-> 761 lived.
Why did the sinking of the USS Lusitania matter?
There is no way A) the US government wasn’t offended that they’d sunk their ship and pissed that so much time, labor, and resources were wasted on that ship and its cargo and B) the people weren’t distraught at the death of so many people-> especially when the Titanic was only like four years prior in 1912.
