Industrialization Thesis Flashcards
Thesis for Industrialization
The three most influential things that led to industrialization was the industrial boom, growth of the steel industry, and national network.
What was the Industrial Boom?
Following the Civil War people wanted to expand. The people had to deal with more immigrants and thus needed more room for immigrants. Then they needed more food but they didn’t have as much room for agriculture in cities since people were making homes on the farmland. Not only that but farming things like cotton became tedious. So the cotton gin and other farming inventions were made. People also probably wanted Industrialization to be better than Great Britain.
Industrial Boom in Simple Terms
Going from doing manual labor with your hands to doing it with machines.
Growth in Steel Industry
After the Industrial Boom people desired more steel to make more machines. Steel was used for more than machines though; it was also used for railroad tracks, barbed wire, weapons, buildings, and motorized vehicles. Steel made Western Expansion Possible.
Growth in Steel Industry
After the Industrial Boom people desired more steel to make more machines. Steel was used for more than machines though; it was also used for railroad tracks, barbed wire, weapons, buildings, and motorized vehicles. Steel made Western Expansion Possible.
National Network
Refers to National Network. From the beginning Civil War to the end of the nineteenth century the miles of tracks grew by like 15,000 miles->but the main one was probably the Transcontinental built by mainly migrant Chinese workers. The other one was the Central and Union Pacific.
What effects did Industrialization have on society?
So the Industrial revolution was the reason for pretty much everything we have today. Well, firstly like pollution and global warming but also like electricity and more efficient building mechanisms. With this growth in industrialization, the US also got more Immigrants which led to Immigration Stations such as Ellis Island (my family’s immigration station place) and Angel Island (the localish one). Immigration is how we even have people in our society. But the more people, the more jobs, and those jobs were not good paying, good hours, or safe. A large growth in child labor and worker abuse was brought about during this time. We hear a lot about Labor Unions and Strikes which are still relevant today.
Small Pox Vaccine
Edward Jenner in 1796 took some material from someone’s smallpox-like bruise and injected it into this kid who was literally named little jimmy. Well, technically it was James Phillips but still. Edward Jenner injected Jimothy with the actual virus but he never got it.
Cotton Gin
Made in 1794 and literally just separates the sticky seeds from the like fibers.
Ellis Island
1892 to 1924 Immigration Station for mostly European countries.
Angel Island
1910-1940 Immigration Station for mostly Asian countries.
Newsboy Strike of 1899
What “Newsies” is based on. Five boroughs of Newsies coming together to organize a strike against rising cost of papers they bought to sell to the public.
Western Expansion
Literally, the colonists expanding west. I’m still calling them colonists because that’s what they are. This was how more resources like steel and gold and such was discovered.
Why were railroads important?
It was how people, news, and things got spread around the nation faster. Such as like steel. Everything comes full circle.
