Schlieffen Plan
Germanys plan to fight the war but ended up failing as it was outdated and made before the Triple Entente was made
Describe the Schlieffen Plan
Germany planned on using Belgium as a walk-through to France, they believed Belgium would not resist,
Planned to invade France and destroy their military, the planned to defeat the French in 6 weeks
90% of German army would go to the East to defeat Russia
And thought Britain would stay neutral
Why did the Schlieffen Plan fail ?
Germany got held up in Belgium by the British army because of the 1839 Treaty of London (which guaranteed the neutrality of Belgium), which gave the French more time to mobilize
It took Russia only 10 days to mobilize, had to withdraw troops to protect the eastern border
Was unable to take over Paris, Battle of the Marne (5-11th Sep)
Battle of the Somme
one of the largest battles of the first world war took place between 1st July and 18th November
Why was the first day of the Battle of the Somme so bad for Britain ?
the British army suffered its worst-ever losses in a single day, a total of 60,000 casualties and 20,000 soldiers killed
Why did this happen to the British ?
- out-of-date tactics
- lack of experienced soldiers
- bad weather
- German defenses
- problems with weapons
- no element of surprise to the Germans
- issues with landscape
