Divine Right
The idea that monarchs are Gods representatives on earth and are therefore answerable only to God.
Absolute Monarchs
A king or queen who has unlimited power and seeks to control all aspects of society
Edict of Nantes
a 1598 declaration in which the French King Henry (the 4th) promised that Protestants could live in peace in France and could set up houses of worship in some French cities.
Cardinal Richelieu
Cardinal Richelieu was a French clergyman, nobleman, and statesman, serving as King Louis XIII’s Chief Minister (sometimes also called First Minister) from 1624.
Skepticism
A philosophy based on the idea that nothing can be known for certain.
Indendants
a title given to a high-ranking official or administrator, especially in France, Spain, Portugal, or one of their colonies.
30 years war
was a 17th-century religious conflict fought primarily in central Europe, lasted from 1618 to 1648, starting as a battle among the Catholic and Protestant states that formed the Holy Roman Empire
Peace of Westphalia
The Peace of Westphalia is the collective name for two peace treaties signed in October 1648 in the Westphalian cities of Osnabrück and Münster. They ended the Thirty Years’ War and brought peace to the Holy Roman Empire

An adoption of the social, political, or economic institutions of Western-especially European or American-countries
English Civil War
a conflict, lasting from 1642 to 1649, in which Puritan supporters of Parliament battled supporters of England’s monarchy

a system of governing in which the ruler’s power is limited by law
Habeas Corpus
a document requiring that a prisoner be brought before the court or judge so that it can be decided weather his or her imprisonment is legal
