How does a place become world heritage listed?

A

To be included on the World Heritage List, a site must have global natural or cultural significance and satisfy the strict criteria outlined by UNESCO.

Why is the Grand Canyon on the World Heritage List?
The Grand Canyon is on the World Heritage List because at nearly 1500 metres deep it is the most spectacular gorge in the world. Its horizontal strata retrace the geological history of the past two billion years. There are also prehistoric traces of human occupation.
