What did WHO say about future epidemics?
risk is not evenly distributed, need to identify first cases
Curing and not harming:
government needs to invest in healthcare, bacterial outbreaks in hospitals
Science and technology:
Tech can track isolated genomics, better survalence
Anticipating emerging:
Old methods are not effected, cross sector collaborations and communication
Preventing the spread:
tourism, inequality and urban epidemics increase spread
Big brother:
modelling outbreaks, learning from heath insurance
Back to back:
Countries must take responsibility and collaborate
What does WHO do?
collects data from the 194 member states and publishes them annually
problems of who:
- critised for reacting too slowly to outbreaks eg Ebola in west Africa
- states can ignore their advise as its not legally binding
- funded by voluntary contributes so if someone pulls out funding decreases
