Factors affecting disease Flashcards
What four factors affect disease?
- temp
- relief
- precipitation
- water source
How does water sources affect disease?
Mosquitos lay eggs in water, so more water results in more breeding ground for mosquitos
How does relief affect disease?
Because as altitude causes changes in climate and disease habitats
How does temperature affect malaria?
27 degrees is optimum temp for mosquitos to develop, so lower temps can result in mosquitos not being able to develop properly so cant transmit
How does altitude affect malaria?
As altitude increases, temperature decreases. Mosquitos cant survive when altitudes are 2000meters
How does humidity affect malaria?
Mosquitos survive better under high humidity. If average monthly relative humidity is below 60%, its believed that the life of mosquito is short so little malaria transmission
Give 2 examples of diseases being affected by seasonal change:
1) Vector born diseases often reach peak during rainy season eg- bilharzia
2) Epidemics of influenza peak in winter months
