World biomes Flashcards
what two parts is the aquatic biome broken in to?
freshwater and marine
what determines if a body of water is freshwater?
if it has less than 3% salt.
List the 3 zones found in a pond or lake?
Littoral,limnetic, and profundal.
what are some flora and fauna in the littoral zone?
amphibians,insect larvae,species of algae,crustaceans,snails,clams…
Describe where a limnetic zone would be found in a lake.
middle of the lake, surrounded by the littoral zone.
What flora and fauna resides in the limnetic zone?
Phytoplankton(plants) and zooplankton(animals) and freshwater fish.
What is the most important thing plankton do?
Provide 90% of the worlds air. 0 plankton= 0 life.
Where is the profundal zone located?
In the deepest part of the lake/pond.
What is a characteristic of the profundal zone?
It is colder and denser b/c little light reaches it.
Where do the dead organisms go when they die in a pond or lake?
The profundal zone!
What are the fauna of the profundal zone?
heterotrophs.
In the profundal zone, what is the heterotrophs job?
To eat dead organisms and use oxygen for cellular respiration.
What are the 4 zones of the marine biome?
inter tidal, neritic, benthic, and abyssal.
What is a characteristic of the inter tidal zone?
It bears high and low tides, which the moon changes every 12 hours.
What is some flora in the inter tidal zone?
Trick question! There is no flora b/c of the constant water movement.
What fauna resides in the inter tidal zone?
Mostly crustaceans like crabs,shrimp,and oysters.
