2015 Study Flashcards
What are the 3 majors parts of a plant?
roots, stem, and leaves
List the 3 parts of the root system.
primary root, lateral root, and root hairs.
What is the primary roots function?
to support the plant
what is the lateral root function?
they grow outwards and downwards to search for water
What is the root hairs function
main collectors of water; they have more area than the primary root, even though it seems bigger.
What is the reason for roots?
anchor the plant, collect water and minerals from soil, store food, are a passage way to transport H2O and minerals to and from the stem
what is the epidermis?
the outer wall; closely- packed, thin-walled parenchyma cells with no cuticle, chloroplasts or stomata
what does the epidermis do?
protects the underlying tissues of the root.
absorb water and dissolved ions.
what is the function of the xylem
transports water and dissolved substances from the roots to the stem and leaves.
What is the main strengthening tissue of the root>
the xylem
What is the phloem’s function?
transports organic substances such as carbohydrates from the leaves to the root.
where is the Apical meristems located?
located at the tips of roots and shoots
what do the apical meristems do?
supply cells for the plant to increase in length (grow up for shoots and down for roots)
what does the cortex do?
Storage of photosynthetic products
Active in the uptake of water and minerals
What is the pericycle in a plant.
found just inside of the endodermis
may become meristematic
responsible for the formation of lateral roots
