What is an acknowledgement of country?
An acknowledgment of country is a respectful way of acknowledging the land you are on, and can be said by anyone
What is a welcome to country?
A welcome to country is usually performed to newcomers by the elders of the community to welcome them to the land they are on
What is the Close the Gap campaign?
The Close the Gap campaign aims to remove the 10 year difference in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and all other Australians

Understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by learning abut their beliefs, values, practices and experiences
Brokerage
- Leads to safety
- Involves two way communication between health professionals and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, where both health professionals and patients are equally informed, important in discussion and mutual respect is present
Safety
Focusing on how an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patient feels when they access health services, and ensuring they receive health services that do not challenge, deny or insult their culture and identity
Protocols
- Leads to security
- Ensure that health services provided are approved of by the community
Security
Involves all health care professionals and intercultural teams working together to provide culturally secure services
Sustainability
Maintenance of culturally secure environments, and consistent delivery of high quality care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
