Workshop 10 - Benign and Malignant connective tumors Flashcards
Connective tissue tumors are composed of differentiated connective tissues of the body:
Connective tissue tumors originate in :
primitive presursor cells :
Pluripotente mezenchimal cells
Benign connective tumors
def. name. macro
Are tissue proliferations that reproduce the structure and function of the tissue of the origin
name : -oma to connective tissue
Macro:
nodular, well defined - with or without capsule
Malignant connective tumors
def.name.
Are tissue proliferations that have lost the abolity to differentiate.
name : -sarcoma
less common than carcinomas,
but more common in children and young people
Malignant tumors
Macro
Sarcomas are :
deep tumoral masses, white-pinkish ( like fresh fish )
bulky, unencapsulated or pseudo-capsuled
locations : deep tissues of extremities,
retroperitoneal sites
Malignant connective tumors
Micro
Hypercellular tumors , with varying degrees of differentiation
They contain sarcomatous vessels and give early hematogenous metastases.
Criteria for malignancy in assessing of histological grade are :
- cellular and nuclear polimorphism
- mitotic activity
- presence of necrosis
prognosis of tumors
is made in relation to :
- location
-
tumor stage
( size, local invasion, hematogenous metastases ) -
histological grade of malignancy
degree of tumor differentiation
and tumor cell mitotic activity
Sarcomas degrees of differentiation
degree I : low
degree II : moderate
degree III : high
2 major types of tumors ( according to the degree )
- low malignancy
( WD well differentiated )
grow slowly, local invasion, rare metastasis - high grade of malignancy
( MD, PD )
grow fast, invasive tumors, rapid metastasis
Benign connective tumors
( 5 )
- leiomyoma
( smooth muscle ) - Lipoma
( fat tissue ) - Chondroma
- Osteoma
- Hemangioma
Leiomyoma
def.macro.micro
tumor of smooth muscle
Macro
nodular tumor, single or multiple,
1-2 cm , without capsule
Micro
without capsule, composed of fascicles of mature smooth muscle fibers
the tumor suffers :
- mixomatous degeneration
- fibrous change
( usually in uterus , GIT )
Lipoma
def.location
Benign tumor composed of mature adipose tissue
Locations: Various
- Superficial : subcutaneous areas
- Deep : intramuscular areas
Lipoma subcutaneous adipose tissue
Macro :
With capsule
tumor is yellow and has lobular appearance in cut sect.
Micro
encapsulates , consisting of mature adipose tissue
and connective - vascular axes
Chondroma
def. originates from:
Is a benign tumor consisting of mature hyaline catilagonous tissue
Originates from :
- cortex of metaphyseal short bones ( hands feet )
- intrabone cartilage of distal extremities
( any bone )
