Workplace Stress Flashcards
Johanson
Investigated factors that influence stress at work by comparing the urine samples, levels of stress related illnesses (eg headaches) and absenteeism of 14 finishers (high workload) and 10 cleaners (low workload).
The finishers had higher levels of adrenaline in their urine, more stress related illnesses and higher absenteeism
Johanson Evaluation
\:) Objective measures \:) High ecological validity \:) Practical Implications \:( Small sample, low generalisability \:( other work factors could differentiate stress levels of finishers and cleaners, eg level of control
Marmot et al
Investigated the effect of control at work on predicted development of coronary heart disease by following 7,000 civil servants over 5 years. Control was assessed with a self report questionnaire and CHD was measured using self report of symptoms and a doctors diagnosis, other risk factors were also measured, eg smoking or blood pressure.
Low control was a better predictor of CHD than high control and other risk factors such as smoking
Marmot et al evaluation
:) Longitudinal study so can asses the cause and effect
:) High populating validity due to large sample
:) High control of extraneous variables
:) Practical implications
:( Not easily replicated
:( Overly simplistic
