Independent Behaviour Flashcards
Why do people resist pressure to conform
- An inconsistent majority
- Gaining an ally
Asch - Gaining an Ally
When the participants gained another participant who said the same answer only 5% of people conformed
Asch - inconsistent majority
When the confederates did not all answer with the same response conformity decreased to 5%
Why do people resist pressure to obey
- Not seeing the authority as legitimate
- Time for discussion
Milgram - Non Legitimate authority
Milgrams study was repeated in a run down office and only 48% conformed.
It was also repeated where the experimenter gave orders over the phone and only 21% shocked all the way.
Locus of control
This is how much people believe they have control over events in their lives.
Rank and Jacobson
Rank and Jacobson believed that the Hofling study was deliberately set up to find obedience levels. They repeated the study but rang during the day. This meant more nurses were working and they had the opportunity to ask advice from others.
Only 2/18 nurses obeyed
Internal locus of control
Someone with ILC would believe that what happens to them is largely a result of their own behaviour. For example, I was late for school because I didn’t wake up early enough
External Locus of control
Someone with and ELC would believe that what happens to them is a result of external factors such as luck or fate. For example, I was late for school this morning, it’s because my alarm didn’t go off
Shute
Participants were tested for LOC using a questionnaire and were then given a conformity task where they were put into groups with people who were very liberal or conservative about drug laws.
People with an internal LOC were less likely to conform to the groups attitudes about drug laws.
Blass
Analysed data from a replication of Milgrams study and found a link between those who disobeyed and an internal LOC
