Social Groups
- A group of people who share a range of physical, cultural, or social character characteristics within one of the categories of social identity
- social group memberships affect people’s values, world views, attitudes, behaviors and experiences.
Social Construction
- when people with power in society define a groups characteristics and determine the groups value
- their perceptions of their own and other social groups are accepted by the larger society
- Americans often think of social group differences as facts of nature, when in reality, they are basically constructed by society based on culture, rather than biology.
Diversity in the US
- In 2000, more than 275 million people lived in the USA
- That number is projected to grow by almost 50% by 2050
- Some 80% of the current US population is categorized as white or Anglo
In fifty years less than 75% of the population will be white.
- Latinos will double over 50 years
- Asian American/Pacific Islanders population is expected to triple
Shifting Age Statistics in the US
- Today only 6% of the US is 65 or older
- in 50 years that will almost double to 11%
Exploration and Colonization of the United States
- British, Spanish, French colonizers
- Nations were excluded and native cultures were decimated
Forced Relocation and Enslavement
- Hundreds and thousands of Africans were uprooted and transported to America to be enslaved
- Prior to American Revolution, an estimated 1 million people of African decent were enslaved
- Slavery was not repealed until generations had passed and people of Africa were far removed from their land.
Expansion into Mexico
- White Settlers tool lands from indigenous peoples as they migrated into the US southwest, lands that were part of Mexico
- Settlement led to Mexican American War
- At the end of the war the lands were ceded to the United States
- Mexican citizens were granted US citizenship and the rights to their lands, but there was no treaty enforcement.

- allows groups to escape persecution
- 1950s refugees were given special treatment
- by law refugees are people fleeing from countries the us considers to be oppressing certain groups
Barriers to service
- social services are often underutilized by people of color because of geographic distances, language barriers, and cultural values
