Working Memory Model Flashcards
what is the role of the central executive in the working memory
allocates memories into either the loop or vssp
Baddeley - picks and chooses info from the loop and vssp to form an episode of memories
phonological loop role and location
Has 2 sub systems for the inner voice and for holding memories of sounds [baddeley supports because he found similar sounding letters are not recalled as well as dissimilar]
Located in left hemisphere in temporal lobe
VSSP and location
Allocates vision memories and is located in right hemisphere with 2 lobes
Episodic buffer and location - discovered by baddeley
Between the loop and vssp
Specialty in episodic ltm
Outs information into patterns or stories
Binds memories together into episodes stored in the LTM
Location in hippocampus
Cocktail party effect
When the brain gets confused hearing 2 convos at once so the loop gets gets confused and can’t process the info being recieved so as a result both get forgotten
Dementia patients
Have trouble with dual tasks
Load can be reduced by a quiet environment [getting rid of background noise]
KF case study
Got into a motorcycle accident and damaged his stm
He struggled to process verbal info [loop]
But no problem with visual [vssp]
This supports working because it proves the 2 are processed separately
How does the study lack ecological validity
Dual task is artificial as in real life scenarios you can also use other senses like paying attention to body language or lip reading so it cannot be applied to real life
Compare with msm
It has replaced the msm as it replaces the stm with something more complicated the KFC study supports
Conclusion
Most successful memory model at the moment although further research into the episodic buffer needed as it is still unclear
