MSM Flashcards
Describe how the MSM functions
- information is received to sensory through the senses
- If you pay attention the information will go to the STM
- then if information is rehearsed it will be encoded to the LTM
information can be recalled from STM to conscious mind
What did Atkinson & Shiffrin find
They discovered the 3 different memory stores; sensory, LTM, STM
Sensory - contains a sub store for each sense , it has a huge capacity but duration of less than a sec
STM - encoded acoustically, capacity of 9 and duration of 25-30 secs
LTM - encoded semantically, unlimited capacity and duration
What did Peterson and Peterson find in terms of the duration of STM
They blocked rehearsal through an interference task
Used 48 trigrams that the pps had to recall
Found that with no rehearsal info cannot be passed to LTM - this supports the msm
What is the evaluation of Peterson in terms of ecological validity
Technique is unrealistic
Learning a list of trigrams is not regular activity meaning msm is based of research that isn’t ecologically valid and therefore cannot be applied to how memory works in real life situations
What is the displacement theory of forgetting
Primary/ recency effect
This is when someone recalls the words from the begging and end and will forget the ones in the middle
This is because middle words are replaced by recency words to to the limited capacity of the LTM
How is Millers work on the capacity of the STM credible
7 items + or - 2
Can hold up to 9 bits of information
Bits can be ur into chunks but they will loose accuracy
MSM applied to eye witnesses
When eyewitness of crimes or accidents they are unreliable when reporting
If they do not pay attention or are distracted details wont reach STM
Lack of rehearsal means it wont reach LTM
Rehearsal will also not occur if victim refuses to talk or think about the event
How can you compare the MSM to the working model
Working is considered an improvement of the msm
Replaced STM
Provided a more detailed explanation of retrieval and rehearsal from the LTM
How does Clive wearing support the MSM
He suffered brain damage in the hippocampus
He could not make any new memories
He used his STM for about 20s then forgot everything
The msm suggests because of his disability he could not rehearse and encode into the ltm
Conclusion
The msm has been a very influential memory model but psychology has since progressed and has replaced it with more complex ones like the working memory model
