Working Memory Model Flashcards
Who created the working memory model?
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
What are the components of the WMM?
- The central executive
- The phonological loop
- The visuo-spatial sketchpad
- Episodic buffer
What is a limitation of the MSM compared to the WMM?
The stores in the MSM are described as single units.
Are the subdivisions in the WMM part of the STM or LMT?
STM
What is the central executive used for?
Used whenever we deal with any task that make cognitive demands.
It monitors incoming data, making decisions and allocating slave systems to tasks.
What is the capacity of the central executive?
Limited capacity
What kind of information can the central executive process?
Any coding of information (modality free)
What kind of information does the phonological loop deal with?
Auditory (acoustic) information.
It preserves the order in which the information arrives.
What are the two sections the phonological loop is divided into?
- The phonological store
- The articulatory control system
What does the phonological store do?
Stores the words you hear.
What does the articulatory control system do?
Allows maintenance rehearsal.
What is the capacity of the phonological loop?
Thought to be two seconds worth of what you can say.
What is the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Responsible for storing visual and/or spatial information when required.
What is the capacity of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Limited capacity of 3-4 objects (according to Baddeley)
When was the episodic buffer added?
2000
