Working Memory Model Flashcards
What are the three AO3 points to evaluate the working memory model?
RTS by patient KF
Discussion - low pop val
Strength - dual task performance
P
(RTS - patient KF)
RTS - patient KF, who suffered with amnesia
E
They found KFs recall was poor when digits were read aloud to him but when visually saw the digits himself, recall was much better
L
This supports WMM bc it suggests there must be diff stores within STM, one to process visual info and one to process auditory info as PL was damaged but VSS was intact
P
(Low pop val)
However, critics would argue that the case study to support the WMM can be criticised for low pop values
E
This is bc the research was a case study of just one person, patient KF, who has damage to the brain
E
This means it is difficult to gen the findings to the wider pop as their STM may operate diff
L
Therefore limiting the support that the research provides for the WMM
P
(Dual task performance)
Studies of dual task performance support the feature that there are seperate components within the STM and it has a limited capacity
E
E.g. baddeley found ppts had more difficulty when doing 2 visual tasks at the same time than when doing one of the visual tasks with a verbal task
E
This supports the WMM assumptions bc it suggests that both visual tasks are competing for limited capacity of the same slave system such as the VSS, whereas when doing a verbal and visual task at the same time, tasks are delegated to seperate slave systems, VSS and PL so performance is not reduced as there is no competition for capacity
L
Therefore supporting the WMM
