Multi Store Model Of Memory Flashcards
What are the three AO3 points to evaluate Atkinson and Shiffrins MSM?
RTS - Clive Wearing
Discussion - low pop val
Weakness - too simplistic about unitary stores (patient KF)
P
(RTS - Clive wearing)
strength - MSM - RTS by a case study from clive wearing
E
he suffers from amnesia so he cannot transfer info from his STM to his LTM
E
this is evident as when his wife re enters the room after leaving just seconds before, he greets her as if its the first time he has seen her in years
L
therefore this supports the MSM coz it shows the STM and LTM are seperate stores and that info must flow in a linear way first from STM then to LTM.
DISCUSSION
however critics would argue RTS is flawed as it has low pop val bc the case study to support MSM is just of one person, clive wearing who has an unusual illness involving damage to the brain. therefore it is difficult to gen the findings to the wider pop as their memory may operate diff, limiting support research provides for MSM
P
(Weakness - too simplistic about unitary stores (patient KF)
Moreover it is suggessted MSM could be too simplistic in stating STM and LTM are unitary stores
E
e.g. research into STM on patient KF who suffered from amnesia, found KFs recall in STM for digits was very poor when read ALOUD but recall was much better when he could visually read digits himself
E
this suggests there must be diff stores within STM, one to process auditory info and one to process visual info
L
therefore weakening theorys assumption the STM is unitary;
