working memory model
extension of the msm
suggests STM is an active store with many subsystems
phonological loop
deals with verbal/auditory information
subvocal rehearsal = stores verbal information presented visually
subcomponents of the phonological loop
- primary acoustic store = stores all info we hear in 1-2 seconds, then refreshes and discards unnecessary information
- articulatory loop = stores information for ongoing task through rehearsal, capacity is determined by how many words we can say in 2 seconds
visuospatial sketchpad
stores visual information and retains info about spatial relationship of visual information
doesn’t rely on rehearsal

- visual cache = stores visual information
- inner scribe = stores spatial information
episodic buffer
store combining information from all five senses
information can then be transferred to LTM to create episodic memories
central executive
directs right information to each store and divides attention across all stores
has no storage capacity as doesn’t store information
allows us to use multiple stores at once
can become overloaded with information
