cognitive interview Flashcards
cognitive interview
geiselman and fisher
interview technique used to improve accuracy of memory recall after an event
components of cognitive interview
mental reinstatement - describe emotions at time of event and aspects of event (time, where standing); internal and external cues help trigger memory
change of perspective - asked to recall event from different perspective, reduces negative effects of schemas, reduces reliance on own schemas
change of narrative order - asks witness to recall events in different order
report everything - asked to recall everything, helps memory accuracy as when recall certain events triggers memory of other events (external/internal cues)
ao3 study support - geiselman
tested effectiveness of cognitive interview vs normal
during lecture intruder wearing blue rucksack steals slide projector
p interviewed two days later, asking misleading question (intruder wearing green rucksack)
control = standard interview
experimental = cognitive interview
= exp group less likely to reinterpret rucksack as green (less susceptible to leading questions)
ao3 - fisher
found cognitive interview 46% more detail, 90% more accurate than standard interview
ao3
- less effective when interviewing children as more likely to become stressed, affects recall accuracy
- some cognitive interview techniques are too complicated
enhanced cognitive interview
geiselman and fisher constructed new version to helps witnesses feel calmer
additional features of enhanced cognitive interview
- interviewers do not interrupt to avoid distraction
- encourages witness not to guess, to say when they feel unsure
