Working Memory Model Flashcards
What are the 2 AO1 subheadings?
AO1- Intro & Central executive
AO1- 3 Slave Sytems
AO1- Intro & Central executive
Key Terms
- Baddley and hitch (1974)
- STM organised and functions
- Mental space, temporary
- 4 main components
- limited capacity, no store
- control, manipulate, process, divert attention etc.
Who proposed the WMM?
The WMM was proposed by Baddley and hitch (1974), as an explanation of how the STM is organised and how it functions
How many components in WMM?
The model consists of 4 main components, each qualitatively different especially in terms of coding and capacity
What can be said about the capacity and storage of the Central Executive?
The CE has a very limited processing capacity and does not store information
What is the role of the CE?
The CE has a ‘supervisory’ role as it diverts attention to different memory stores or slave systems and controls, manipulates and processes this information
AO1- 3 Slave Sytems
Key Terms
- phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad, episodic buffer
- acoustic, auditory, languages, phonological store (inner ear), sound-based code, decays 2 secs, articulatory process
- articulatory process (outer ear), revive, repetition, 1.5 to 2 secs
- visual, spatial, kinesthetic visual cache + inner scribe (3 to 4 items),
- episodic buffer, 2000, Baddedly, combines
What are the 4 AO3s?
- CE too vague (-)
- Active processor (+)
- KF- suffered from brain damage which caused him to remember words better visually than acoustically (+)
- Berz 1995 (-)
CE too vague (-)
For example, the role of the CE has not been adequately explained within the WMM
misunderstood -> hard to investigate -> robust -> validate -> lacks explanatory power
Active processor (+)
For instance, unlike the MSM, the WMM is able to explain the temporary storage and active processing through the phonological store and the phonological loop
Deep understanding -> more research -> updated -> better explains
Berz 1995 (-) STM not limited capacity
For instance, Berz (1995) found that individuals have the ability to listen to music without impairing performance on other acoustic tasks
question validity -> substantiate claims -> understanding -> theoretical
AO3- KF- suffered from brain damage which caused him to remember words better visually than acoustically (+)
Evidence is point
Claim 1+ store substantiated -> reliability -> credibility -> plausibility -> more compelling
