Multi Store Model of Memory Flashcards
What are the 2 AO1s?
AO1 - Intro to MMM
AO1 - MMM specific info
AO1 - Intro to MMM
Key terms
- Attkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
- attention, transfer
- decay, rehearse
AO1 - MMM specific into (basically the whole table)
Sensory register
Encoding
The format the information is stored in
Attention (sperling 1960)
Acoustically - sound
(Baddeley 1966a)
Semantically- meaning (baddedley 1966b)
Capacity
The amount of info that can be held
Limited (sperling 1960)
7+ or -2 items (miller) 1956 (jacobs) 1887
unlimited
Duration
The length of time information can be held
Limited (sperling 1960)
Aprox 18 secs (peterson and peterson) 1959
Approx. a lifetime (Bahrick) 1975
Who proposed the MMM?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
What are the 3 AO3s?
- Distinct stores of LTM and STM (+)
- Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) (+)
- Contradictory research (-) (KF)
- Information in model vs nature of model
Distinct stores of LTM and STM (+)
Clive Wearing suffered from brain damage which inhibited his ability to transfer information from the STM to the LTM, however he could retrieve old memories but not create new ones, if memory were to be one store, both STM and LTM would’ve been damaged
substantiated irl -> core claim -> distinct stores -> credibility -> theoretical
Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) (+)
participants tended to remember the 1st 5 words and the last 5 words of the list given due to the primacy and recency effect
core on rehearsal validated -> controlled -> scientific credibility -> elaborative rehearsal -> plausibility
KF Contradictory (-)
patient KF suffered from brain damage which impacted verbal information in the STM but not visual information (controlled study btw)
simplisic -> challenge -> limit explanatory -> plausibility -> modified?
AO3 – information in model vs nature of model
For instance, it could be possible that some material is easier to remember because it is more interesting
underemphasised-> plausibility -> credibility
MMM vs WMM 2 points
The Multi-store model illustrates STM as a single store but the Working Memory Model on the contrary, explains short-term memory as having three components to it.
The Multi-store model describes the loss of memory through decay, which the Working Memory model doesn’t.
