Working memory model Flashcards
What is the working memory model
Describes the function of STM
What is the central executive
Controls the other systems, involved in dual processing, an attention process with limited capacity.
What is the phonological loop
- Involved with speech
- acoustic coding and speech based
- limited capacity
- contains the articulatory control system which is a rehearsal loop and the phonological store which is where information is stored in acoustic form.
What is the visuo-spacial sketchpad
Stores memory for what things look like and where they are in relation to each other. Visual coding.
What is the episodic buffer
Coordinates the two stores into one thought. a buffer between working memory and LTM.
What is dual processing
It is possible to carry out visual and phonological tasks simultaneously
- CE controls dual processing
- Only possible if the overall demand isn’t too great
- If either task is too demanding the performance will be compromised.
Strengths to the WMM
+Strong empirical support for separation of VS and PL tasks. (Baddley)
+supported by brain studies (VS and PL tasks use different parts of the brain)
+CE is supported by KF
Weakness to the WMM
The CE is less understood than the other components and less researched.
empirical support for destinction
Baddely- couldn’t perform task in same modality
Brain studies
Baddely- different areas.
Patient KF
Motorcycle accident- could do visual but not sound
