Multistore model of memory Flashcards
What is the multistore model of memory
Describes the flow between three permanent storage systems of memory.
Who developed the MSM theory
Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968
What is sensory memory
Where information from the senses is stored. Whichever sense is registered will match the way it is consequently held.
What is Short term memory
Sensory information moves into the STM for temporary storage. Capacity increased through chunking.
What is long term memory
Once information os rehearsed via the rehearsal loo[ it consolidates it to the LTM
What is the coding, capacity and duration of sensory memory
Coding- sensory form
capacity- very large
duration- a few milliseconds
What is the coding, capacity and duration of STM.
Coding- Acoustically, visually
capacity- 7 +/- 2
duration <30s
What is the coding, capacity and duration of LTM
Coding- semantically
capacity- unlimited
duration- a lifetime
Strengths of the MSM
+lots of research supporting the distinction (HM)
+Influenced other research (WMM)
Weaknesses of MSM
- Simplified description
- Insignificant stimuli remembered
- We can only assume LTM is unlimited
- New LTM can be made without rehearsal
HM
Hippocampus removed to relieve epilepsy- couldn’t form new ltm memories but could do well on STM tasks. Communication between LTM and STM was damaged.
New LTM can be made without rehearsal
How much is processed is more important.
Craik and Tulving words processed more deeply were more likely to be recalled.
