Working Memory Flashcards
What are the main 2 components of working memory?
Maintenance (Storage) and Control. Representations that form from symbolic code of an object stored transiently or permanently in neuronal networks. Operations are the processes or computations performed on these symbols.
What is working memory?
Memory that aids immediate things you are doing. Stuff you’re working with. The idea behind Maintenance and Control is that these maintain and control stimuli. Basically working with these stimuli.
What is the difference between working memory and short-term memory?
Working memory is both maintenance and control. STM is just the maintenance piece.
Where do the dorsal and ventral streams end up?
Both the dorsal and ventral streams end up in the prefrontal cortex.
Why all the focus on the prefrontal cortex with working memory?
The experiment Jacobson, 1936 showed how monkeys with removed prefrontal cortices had impaired working memory ability (like, it didn’t exist).
What is the arcuate sulcus?
The arcuate sulcus is the sulcus that separates the PFC and the rest of the frontal lobe. Could someone please check and see if this is the location of the FEF? I think it might be…
Ocular Delayed Response Task (ODR)
Damage to the back third of the PFC leads to contralateral impairment of working memory. More time between stimulus and memory led to greater impairment.
What is a mnemonic scotoma?
A mnemonic scotoma occurs when a piece of the memory field has impaired working memory, as shown in the Ocular Delayed Response Task.
Neurons are SPECIALIZED!!!
Neurons in the PFC have specific tunings for area and type of stimulus based on individual preferences that allow for the contralateral organization of working memory.
TMS (Abbrev.)
Transcortical Magnetic Stimulation
FEF location IN MONKEY
FEF located in principle sulcus IN MONKEY.
Where is working memory centered in humans?
Working memory IN HUMANS is centered in the Precentral Sulcus.
