What is E?
Ilio-hypogastric nerve
What is H?
Lateral cutaneous nerve
What is I?
Obturator nerve
What is J?
Femoral nerve
What is the inguinal canal?
Oblique passage through the lower part of abdominal wall
Provides a passage for structures to genital region
What are the contents on the inguinal canal?
Spermatic cord in males
Round ligaments in females
Ilioinguinal nerve
Genital branch of genitofemoral nerve
Where is the superficial inguinal ring?
Breaks through aponeurosis of external oblique muscle
Where is the deep inguinal ring?
Positioned above pubic tubercle
Is oval shaped and is in the transversalis fascia
Describe an indirect inguinal hernia
Passes through the inguinal canal and can end up in scrotum
Lateral to inferior epigastric artery
Describe a direct inguinal hernia
Weakness of abdominal wall which allows direct protrusion through the wall
Medial to the inferior epigastric artery
What is the anterior border of the inguinal canal?
Aponeurosis of external oblique muscle and reinforced by internal oblique muscle laterally
What is the posterior border of the inguinal canal?
Transversalis fascia
What is the roof of the inguinal canal?
Transversalis fascia, internal oblique and transversus abdominis
What is the floor of the inguinal canal?
Inguinal ligament
What are the attachments of the quadratus lumborum?
Originates from iliac crest + iliolumbar ligament
Inserts into spinous processes of L1-4 and 12th rib
What is the action of the quadratus lumborum?
Extension and lateral flexion of vertebral column
What is the innervation of quadratus lumborum?
Anterior rami of T12-L4 nerves
What is the attachments of the psoas major?
Transverse processes of T12-L5
Attaches to lesser trochanter of femur
What is the action of the psoas major?
Flexion of the thigh and lateral flexion of vertebral column
What is the innervation of the psoas major?
Anterior rami of L1-3 nerves
What is the attachments of the iliacus muscle?
Surface of iliac fossa and anterior inferior iliac spine
Combines with tendon of psoas major and inserts into lesser trochanter of femur
What is the action of the iliacus?
Flexion and lateral rotation of hip joint
What is the innervation of the ilicus muscle?
Femoral nerve - L2-4
What is the attachments of the external oblique muscle?
Originates from ribs 5-12
Inserts into iliac crest and pubic tubercle
What is the action of the external oblique muscle?
Contralateral rotation of the torso
What is the innervation of the external oblique muscle?
Ventral rami of T7-T12
What is the attachments of the internal oblique muscle?
Originates from iliac crest, inguinal ligament and lumbodorsal fascia
Inserts onto ribs 10-12
What is the action of the internal oblique muscle?
Bilateral contraction compresses the abdomen while unilateral ipsilateral rotates the torso
What is the innervation of the internal oblique muscle?
Anterior rami of T7-12 and lumbar plexus
What are the attachments of the transversus abdominis?
Originates from inguinal ligament costal cartilages of T7-12, iliac crest and thoracolumbar fascia
Inserts into conjoint tendon, xiphoid process, linea alba, and pubic crest
What is the action of the transversus abdominis?
Compresses abdominal contents
What is the innervation of the transversus abdominis?
T7-12 and lumbar plexus
What are the attachments of the rectus muscle?
Originates from crest of pubis bone
Inserts onto xiphoid process of sternum and costal cartilage of ribs 5-7
What is the actions of the rectus abdominis?
Stabilises pelvis when walking and depresses the ribs
What is the innervation of the rectus abdominis?
Ventral rami of T7-11
