Work, Potential Energy, and Kinetic Energy (78 & 79) Flashcards
When is Work done?
When a Force moves an object through a Distance.
What is the equation for Work done?
W = F x d
What units do we measure Work in?
Joules
What is Gravitational Potential Energy?
Gravitational Potential Energy is the Energy that an object has because of its vertical position in a Gravitational Field.
What is the formula for Gravitational Potential Energy?
GPE = mass x g x height
What is Gravitational Potential Energy measured in?
It is measured in Joules.
What is the relationship between Gravitational Potential Energy and Work Done?
The Work Done to lift an object is equal to the Gravitational Potential Energy it has when lifted.
What is Kinetic Energy?
Kinetic Energy is the Energy of movement. Everything that is moving has Kinetic Energy.
What is the formula for Kinetic Energy?
KE = 1/2 x Mass x Velocity2
What is the relationship between the GPE and the KE of a falling object?
An objects Gravitational Potential Energy before it drops is equal to its Kinetic Energy as it hits the ground. Another way to put it is that the GPE at the top = the KE at the bottom.
