Work of Christ Flashcards
Salvation
The four terms show how Christ’s death met the four needs that we have as sinners:
- We deserve to die as the penalty for sin.
- We deserve to bear God’s wrath against sin.
- We are separated from God by our sins.
- We are in bondage to sin and to the kingdom of Satan.
John 3:16
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God
Isaiah 53:6
The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all
Penal (Substitutionary Atonement)
1 Peter 2:24
Romans
3:23–25
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Extent of the Atonement
John 10:14–15
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Acts 13:48
And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of God; and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed
Romans 8:28-30
We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Ephesians 1:4-6
He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace.
Reconciliation
2 Corinthians 5:18-19
through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself
To overcome our separation from God, we needed someone to provide reconciliation and thereby bring us back into fellowship with God.
Redemption
Mark 10:45
For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many
Because we as sinners are in bondage to sin and to Satan, we need someone to provide redemption and thereby “redeem” us out of that bondage. When we speak of redemption, the idea of a “ransom” comes into view. A ransom is the price paid to redeem someone from bondage or captivity.
Propitiation
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins
To remove us from the wrath of God that we deserved, Christ died as a propitiation for our sins.
Resurrection
Luke 24
John 20
Matthew 28
1 Corinthians 15:20-23
…first fruits…
Ascension
Hebrews 7:25
He always lives to make intercession
Luke 24:50-51
lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven
John 14:2-3
In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also
After Jesus’ resurrection, he was on earth for forty days (Acts 1: 3), then he led them out to Bethany, just outside Jerusalem, and ascended
Sending the HS
John 16:7
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
Intercession
Romans 8:34
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
