Soteriology Flashcards
Leading someone to Christ
- All people have sinned (Rom. 3: 23).
- The penalty for our sin is death (Rom. 6: 23).
- Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty for our sins (Rom. 5: 8).
Religious Pluralism
“There are many paths to God.”
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Election
Acts 13:48
And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of God; and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed
Romans 8:28-30
We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Ephesians 1:4-6
He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace.
Regeneration
John 1:13
were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God
Ezekiel 36:26-27
A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will take out of your flesh the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances.
Regeneration is a secret act of God in which he imparts new spiritual life to us. This is sometimes called “being born again” (using language from John 3: 3– 8). - Grudem
Spirit Baptism
Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance
Acts 19:6
when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied
Repentance and Faith
James 2:19
You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe— and shudder
Isaiah 55:6-7
Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Conversion is our willing response to the gospel call, in which we sincerely repent of sins and place our trust in Christ for salvation - Grudem
Justification
Romans 5:1
Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ
Galatians 2:16
a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ
Justification is an instantaneous legal act of God in which he (1) thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in his sight. - Grudem
Mercy and Grace
Matthew 5:44-45
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Irresistible Grace
1 Peter 1:3
“…he has caused us to be born again…”
The grace that the Holy Spirit extends in the effective call of God cannot be thwarted or refused by man.
Prevenient Grace
The Arminian doctrine that states that all people are granted sufficient grace to allow them to chose to follow or reject God. Denies election, but affirms God’s grace is first necessary for obedience.
The Process of Salvation
“The Order of Salvation”
- Election (God’s choice of people to be saved)
- The gospel call (proclaiming the message of the gospel)
- Regeneration (being born again)
- Conversion (faith and repentance)
- Justification (right legal standing)
- Adoption (membership in God’s family)
- Sanctification (right conduct of life)
- Perseverance (remaining a Christian)
- Death (going to be with the Lord)
- Glorification (receiving a resurrection body)
Salvation in the Old Testament

Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

Heroes of the faith…
Adoption
John 1:12
But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God

…and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Adoption is an act of God whereby he makes us members of his family - Grudem
Sanctification
2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Philippians 3:13-14
Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus
Sanctification is a progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives. - Grudem
