A

Acts 2:44-47
And all who believed were together and had all things in common…

Philippians 2:1-2…if there is any fellowship of the Spirit … make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose

Ephesians 4:1-6…eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all…

Q

HS’s Relative Presence

A

Many examples in both the Old and New Testament indicate that the Holy Spirit will bestow or withdraw blessing according to whether or not he is pleased by the situation he sees • Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul when he continued in disobedience (1 Sam 16:14) • Spirit poured out a Pentecost (Acts 2:17-18) • Many activities are said to be done “in” the HS: rejoice, pray, love, have our conscience bear witness, etc

Q

Continuation or Cessation of Gifts?

A

1 Corinthians 13:8-10
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

  • These verses primarily compare Love to the other three, they do not make a difinitive statement about the continuation of Gifts

Q

The Gift of Tongues

A

1 Corinthians 14:5-19
Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy… unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up… For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also… I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Q

The Gift of Prophecy

A
  • Does not carry the authority of the OT Prophets (Paul disregards in Acts 21:4)
  • The term “Prophet” is no longer used to apply to those who write God’s words, it is replaced by “Apostle”
  • The gift of prophecy in the NT is telling something that God has spontaneously brought to mind. - Grudem
  • The subjective revelation of God to an individual or group that differs from Scripture in content or emphasis, and is always subject to Scripture’s and carries only subjective authority of its own (cannot contradict Scripture).
