work-life balance Flashcards
What is the ‘sandwiched generation”
baby boomers responsible for ageing parents as they are ready to get leadership positions in business
What are the work-family interface components (how can work and fam influence eachother)
Pos 1. Work to family enrichment 2. Family to work enrichment Neg 1. Work to family conflict 2. family to work conflict
What is work-family conflict (WFC)
non-work life is more difficult because of work
time-based- e.g. have to worrk late
strain-based- get and too tired to do anything
behavior-based- roles in work and home not same e.g. cant talk to wife how talk to employee
What are 3 things that lead to WFC
- work related- job demands, long hours
- family- parenting stress, young children
- individual differences- neg affect
What are consequences of WFC
- work related outcomes
- less job satisfaction, performance, commitment
- absenteeism - Non-work related outcomes
- less life, mental, family satisfaction
- less family involvement - stress related outcomes
- depression
- burnout
- substance abuse
What is the conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll) (WFC)
- Individuals are assumed to work to protect and conserve resources they value (objects, roles, time for work, money, status at work, help with tasks)
- Actual or threatened loos of resources (or not gaining after investing) causes stress
- Gains lead to gains (payrise=work more), losses lead to losses
- when work and fam compete for these resources leads to role strain
What is work-family enrichment (WFE)
- participating in work has a pos influence on family life
- development (helps me develop my abilities and be better family member)
- affect (puts me in good mood helping me be better fam member)
- capital (provides sense of accomplishment helping me be better fam member)
3 things that leads to WFE
- Work- (complexity, autonomy (accomplished, happy), support)
- Family (support, value family, age of children)
- individual (neuroticism, openness, women have less)
Consequences of WFE
- Health (life satisfaction, mental/physical health, less burnout)
- Organisational (increase job satisfaction/commitment)
- family (increase satisfaction and relo quality)
The resource gain development model (WFE)
-Naturally we want to get resources (develop, achieve, grow)
-Get resources at work and apply them at home
High resources= high WFE
-job stability
-partner
-social support/ finances
Low resources= low WFE
- casual work
- divorced
- isolation/low income
How can WFE and WFC co-occur
e. g. get home miss football but happy because have support at work
e. g. good uni experience helps with bad work experience
Low WFE + Low WFC = Passive
Low WFE + High WFC = harmful
High WFE + Low WFC = beneficial
High WFE + High WFC = Active
What are some strategies to prevent WFC
- Provide employee services- gym, onsite childcare
- provide employee benefits -paid parental leave
- job restructure- part-time work, flexible work hours, self management of shifts
- supportive leadership and training
