Q

A
  • Station/work uniforms
  • Safety shoes or bunker boots
  • Firefighting gloves (where appropriate)
  • Personal flotation devices (where appropriate)
  • Water rescue helmet
17
Q

What type of rope on apparatus is not tagged, and why?

A

Utility rope and RIT line, as it is not for supporting human life

18
Q

How is rope identified in the tagging system (ie. RR-01-50)?

A

RR/WR/RIT - Type of rope (rescue rope, water rope)

01 - Rope #

50 - Length of rope, in metres

19
Q

What is to be looked for during a rope inspection, and what may these be indications of?

A

Discoloration - may indicate chemical damage

Glossy marks, glazed surface - may indicate heat fusion

Exposed core fibers - may indicate damage to sheath

Fraying, cuts, chafing - may indicate broken sheath bundles

Lack of uniformity in diameter (hour glass shaping) - may indicate core damage

Inconsistencies in texture and stiffness - may indicate core damage

20
Q

When should rope be washed in the extractor?

A

When the outer sheath appears to be dirty

21
Q

How should the rope be coiled prior to being put in the extractor for cleaning?

A

In a chain knot

22
Q

What temperature should the water be for rope being cleaned in the extractor, and what setting is used?

A

Cold water, machine setting 03

23
Q

How should rope be dried, and what should not be done?

A

Hung to dry in the hose tower

Not to be dried using heat or sunlight

24
Q

How should rope ends be fused, and what is the reason for this?

A

Firmly tape the rope (using electrical tape) where the rope is to be cut, cut down the center of the tape, fuse the cut end with heat (ie. lighter)

To avoid snagging

25
Q

When should rope be retired?

A
  • Has been shocked while under load
  • Doesn’t pass rope inspection criteria
  • Exposed to chemicals
  • Exceeded life span
26
Q

What should be taken into consideration during a risk assessment when operating on a roof?

A
  • Type of roof construction
  • Location of fire
  • How long fire has been burning due to structural integrity
27
Q

What should be done when it is determined that roof operations are needed?

A
  • Provide alternate means of escape
  • Appoint Roof Sector Officer under IMS
  • Sound path of travel
28
Q

What are some indications of pre-flashover?

A
  • Room gets hot very quickly
  • Smoke suddenly drops to floor level
  • Roll-over, in some cases
  • Temperatures at waist height are hot enough to melt a visor
29
Q

What precautions should be followed when pre-flashover conditions exist?

A
  • Get as low as possible
  • Get out as quickly as possible using any safe exit
  • When smoke drops, immediately discharge water at the ceiling to cool the gas (may result in steam burns, but preferable to flashover burns)
30
Q

How many hours of driving training are required each month?

A

4 hours (2 hours on Pumper, 2 hours on Aerial, Tanker or Rescue)
