Earning vs Caring?
Family definition is too narrow, look at single people without family and load on the work. Every individual has things they need to care about. Expand past marraige and kids, animals, significant others, older adults
What are some workplace accomodation policies?
Onsite dependent care (kids? pets?) Flexible scheduling (just hit the deadline) Alternative workplace (virtual)..research shows that men are viewed more negatively than women for taking advantage of these policies
What is telework?
Any form of substituation of information technologies for work related travel..
Positives of telework for individual
- Flexiblity of time and space
- Financial savings (commute, clothes, meals out)
- Child care
- Time saved on commute
Negative impacts on individual
- Isolation from tech support
- Social isolation
- Work-family role conflict
- Variability in compensation
- Increased availability expectations
- Less learning from others (physically co present learning)
What is the positive impact on organizations?
- Cost saving (office space, parking)
- Teleworkers tend to be more productive
- Decreased carbon footprint
- Increased attraction and retention (live change..people move but may stay with company)
What are the negative effects on organizations?
- Difficulty managing employees from a distance
- Socialization efforts are strained
- Communication- Loss of informal networks (bump into one another have creative connection and problem solving)
- Lose of face to face
