Leadership and Interaction?
- Leader is not synonymous with supervisor.
- Leadership is not a particular trait some people have and others do not
- It is a process that takes place in every human interaction

- Interactional: Takes place through communication

Trait Approach to Leadership?
- Assumes that some people are natural born leaders
- Attempt to identify traits of effective leaders (across situations)

Situational Approach to Leadership?
Leader varies behavior based on “readiness of the followers (maturity)
This determines emphasis on task and relational (influenced by situation)

- Followers have goals, and are rewarded/punished based on whether they meet those performance goals

Leaders appeal to higher order needs of followers…Involve several tactics
- Leaders must have ATTRIBUTED charisma (
- Idealized influence (Role model, others look how to do it)
- Inspirational Motivation (continue despite hardships
- Intellectual stimulation (Think creatively, multiple solutions
- Individualized concern for each employee
What is relational leading?
It is transformational, but.
The focus is on the relational process of people working together for a common good
What are the 5 principles of relational leading?
Inclusiveness ( appreciate multiple perspectives)
Empowerment (open to genuine participation, power must not be held by leader)
Ethics (Hold self and others to moral principles
Purposefulness (be committed an motivate others for goal..common good)
Process Orientation (Understand Group Process)
