Work, Energy, Power, And Efficiency 030102g Flashcards
What is mass the measure of?
The amount of substance contained by an object. Mass is constant no matter where it is located. Measured in kg.
What is force and what is it measured in?
Force is any influence that attempts to cause a change in the relative motion of an object. Measured in Newtons (N)
What is weight?
Weight is the measurement of the force required to equal the force of gravity that exists between two masses.
How much force does an object exert at sea level per kg?
About 9.81 newtons.
What are the other forces besides gravity?
Electromagnetic Force - force between two electrical charges.
Strong Nuclear Force - force that holds protons and neutrons together in the nucleus of an atom.
Weak Nuclear Force - force between sub-atomic particles.
What is the definition of work and what is it measured in?
Is the application of a force to an object to change its motion. If an object does not move no work is being done. Work is measured in joules (J).
What is the equation to calculate work?
(Force) X (Distance in meters) = Joules
Define Energy?
Energy is the capacity to do work. Anything that could do work is said to possess energy. Measured in joules (J).
What are the two types of energy?
Kinetic Energy - energy stored in the motion of objects.
Potential Energy - energy stored by the position of objects.
What are a few types of potential energy?
Gravitational
Electrical
Magnetic
Elastic.
Define Power and what is it measured in?
Power is the rate of doing work. Power take in to account the time required for work to be done. Measured in watts (W).
