Work, Energy & Power Flashcards
What is work done?
The amount of energy transferred when an external force causes an object to move a certain distance
What is the work done equation of if the force is parallel to the objects displacement?
W = Fx
W = work done J
F = force applied N
x = displacement m
What is 1 joule?
The energy transferred to (or work done on) an object when a force of 1 N acts on the object parallel to its motion through a distance of 1 m
What is the SI unit for a joule?
kg m^2 s^-2
What is the work done equation if the force is at an angle in comparison to the motion (horizontal) ?
W = Fx cos θ
What is the work done equation if the force is at an angle in comparison to the motion (vertical) ?
W = Fx sin θ
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred from one form to another
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of a moving object
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy stored in a mass due to its position in a gravitational field
What is elastic energy?
The energy of a stretched spring or elastic band
What is chemical energy?
The energy contained in a chemical substance
What is nuclear energy?
The energy contained within the nucleus of an atom
What is internal energy?
The energy something has due to its temperature
What are the energy transfers?
- Kinetic
- Thermal
- Sound
- Electrical
- Light
What are the energy stores?
- Elastic
- Gravitational potential
- Chemical
- Nuclear
What is energy dissipation?
It describes the ways in which energy is wasted ; when energy is transferred from one form to another, not all the energy will end up in the desired form. Any energy not transferred to the useful store is wasted
What are the energy transfers for a falling object?
Gravitational potential energy —> kinetic energy
What are the energy transfers for a battery (connected to a bulb)?
Chemical energy —> electrical energy —> light energy
What are the energy transfers for a horizontal mass on a string?
Elastic potential energy —> kinetic energy
What does loss in GPE equal?
Gain in kinetic energy
What is the transfer of energy equal to?
Work done
The faster an object is moving, the _______ its kinetic energy
Greater
What is the kinetic energy equation?
KE = 1/2 mv^2
How do you derive the KE equation?
