Work, Energy and Power Flashcards
What is work done?
Force x distance
Equal to the energy transferred from one form to another.
What is a joule?
One Joule is the work done when a force of 1 newton moves an object through a distance of 1 metre.
What is the principle of conservation energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can be transferred from one form to another but the total amount of energy in a closed system will not change.
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of a body due to its motion.
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy of an object has due to its position in a gravitational field.
What is power?
Rate at which work is done
What is a Watt?
The rate of energy transfer that is equal to 1 joule per second
How do you derive power = force * velocity?
- P = W/t
- W = Fx
- P = Fx/t
- v = x/t
- So P = F x v
What is impulse?
The product of force and time for which the force acts.
What is the area under a force-time graph?
Impulse
What is the conservation of momentum?
For a closed system, the total momentum of objects before a collision = total momentum of the objects after collison
What is a perfectly elastic collision?
A collision which there is no loss of kinetic energy in the collision
What is an inelastic collision?
A collision in which part of the kinetic energy before the collision is transferred to other forms of energy after the collision.
