Work and Energy Flashcards
When does a force do work?
A force does work if the object the force acts on moves in the same direction as the force.
More work is done when…
- The force is bigger
- The distance moved is greater
- When the force and the direction of the object moved are in the same direction.
What is the equation to find work?
Work= Force * Distance
Three situations when there is a force or distance traveled but no work is done
- When the force and direction are perpendicular
- When a force is applied but the object doesn’t go anywhere
- When an object goes somewhere but there are no forces acting upon it.
Potential Energy
Potential energy is the stored energy of an object or particle due to its position compared with other objects
What is potential energy always associated with?
A force
When does potential energy increase?
When it is moved against the force
Total energy
Objects can have both kinetic and potential energy at the same time. The total energy of an object is the sum of the potential and kinetic energies.
Energy
Energy is the ability to do work.
How does energy effect work?
- If the object has energy then it can do work
- The amount of work an object can do is equal to the amount of energy it has.
- If an object has no energy, then it can do no work.
How does work affect energy?
- The amount of work done on an object is equal to the energy it gains
- The amount of energy an object has is equal to the amount of work it can do.
What are work and energy measured in?
Joules
What are the two types of energy?
Kinetic and potential
What is kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy is the energy of an object or particle due to its motion.
Kinetic energy and motion
- If an object or any part of an object moves in any way it has kinetic energy.
- The more an object or part of an object moves the more kinetic energy it has.
