What is meant by morphology
A core unit of meaning in any word
Morpheme
Smallest unit of meaning in a language that cannot be divided any further e.g. /ly/ in ‘beautifully’
Root
A group of letters with meaning - can be added through suffixes and prefixes
Prefix
Element added before words to create new words e.g. inform
Suffix
Element added at the end of words e.g. formal
Inflection
Works similarly to a suffix but instead of creating a new word it serves a grammatical function e.g. by adding inflection ‘ed’ to ‘stop’ you change the tense.
Etymology
The study of word structure and where it derives from.
Compound word
Two words that can stand alone but together create a new word e.g ‘goodbye’
Comparative adjective
Comparison expressed using ‘er’ ending or ‘more’s e.g. he is taller than Amy, or Amy is more able than Peter.
Superlative adjective
Exaggerative, words containing ‘est’ or phrases with ‘most’ e.g. she was the most beautiful girl in the world.
Plural noun
Indicates that there is more than one person, animal, place, thing, idea - you can use s, es, ies, to show this.
