To become familiar with terms associated with phonology, graphology and how the writing system represents the sound system.
What is phonology?
Phonology is the study of the patterns of sounds in a language and across languages.
What are phonemes?
Smallest unit of sound, can be made up of more than one or more letters.
What is a grapheme?
Grapheme refers to the written representation of letters.
What is a digraph?
Two letters one sound e.g ‘th’.
What is a trigraph?
Trigraph refers to a phoneme made up of three letters that make one sound e.g. ‘igh’
What is meant by segmenting?
Breaking a word up into to phonemes e.g. /c/a/t/
What is meant by blending?
Stringing together phonemes that have been segmenting.
What is a syllable?
A unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or part of a word; for example, there are two syllables in water and three in inferno.
What is meant by rime?
A rime is part of a syllable which consists of its vowel and any condiment sounds that come after it.
In spit for e.g. /sp/ onset, /it/ rime
What does it mean to blend in phonics
Stringing together phonemes that have been segmented.
Onset
Onset is the part of the syllable that precedes the vowel of the syllable e.g. /b/ in ‘bat’.
Vowels
Letter representing speech sound made using the vocal tract open A E I O U
Consonants
A basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed and which can be combined with a vowel to form a syllable.
