A new word
Neologisms
The study of the origin and history of a word
Etymology
taking over of words from other languages.
Borrowing
A joining of two separate words to produce a single form.
Compounding
includes joining of two words + reduction.
Blending
Reduction of ONE word, it occurs when a word of more than one syllable.
is reduced.
Clipping
A longer word is reduced to a single syllable, then -y or -ie is added to the end.
Hypocorisms
A special type of reduction: a word of one type (usually a noun) is reduced.
to form a word of another type (usually a verb).
Backformation
Known as “category change” &“functional shift.” It is a change in the function of
a word, without any reduction. It’s very productive in modern English.
Conversion
the invention and general use of totally new terms. It
is not very common in English.
Coinage
are new words formed from the initial letters of a set of
other words. Examples: written in capital letters.
Acronyms
It is the most common word- formation process in the production of new
English words. E.g affixes: un-, mis-, pre-, -ful, -less, -ish, -ism &-ness
